Synopsis

Prokesch-Osten travelled extensively in Greece, Asia Minor and Egypt after 1823 when he was charged with surveying Austrian commerce in the Levant. In 1826 he was sent on a scientific mission to Egypt. From 1827 on he acted as political advisor to the Austrian fleet in the Aegean. In 1834 he was named Austrian Minister in Athens. Prokesch-Osten wrote a number of books connected with his experiences in the Levant: Errinerungen aus Aegypten und Kleinasien, 3 vols, 1828-31; Reise ins Heilige Land (this work), 1831; and das Land zwischen den Katarakten des Nils, 1837.
