Synopsis

Abu al-Qasim Mahmud ibn Umar al-Zamakhshari (1075-1144), known as al-Zamakhshari, also called Jar Allah (Arabic for “God’s neighbour”), was a medieval Muslim scholar of Persian origin, who subscribed to the Muʿtazilite theological doctrine. He was born in Khwarezmia, but lived most of his life in Bukhara, Samarkand, and Baghdad. He was a great authority on the Arabic language as well as a rationalist theologian. This little publication drew Hammer into a serious scholarly dispute with the German Arabist Fleischer, who set out in his 1836 counter-translation Hammer’s philological weaknesses.
