Synopsis

Rare work. Paul Collart (1902-1981) was an extraordinary Swiss Professor of archaeology. In 1953, Unesco entrusted him with the inventory of the cultural property of Syria and Lebanon. From 1954 to 1956, C. led the first major Swiss excavation in Palmyra (Syria). Director of the Swiss Institute of Rome (1963-1970). From his travels around the Mediterranean (1928-1970), he brought back thousands of photographs. Georges Perrot Medal of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres of Paris (1971). This is his report written during his mission to Syria as representative of Unesco in 1953.
