Synopsis

Hornemann (1722-1801) was one of the most important explorers of the Sahara. In 1798 he started his expedition from Cairo into the Sahara and Sudan. Dressed like a Muslim, he joined a caravan which went to Murzuk in Fessan via Siwa and Audschila oases which no European had used before. His report contains the first reliable information on the tribes of the Tubu and Tuareg and increased the geographical knowledge of the Central Sahara and Sudan considerable.
