Synopsis

Scarce. It is highly unlikely that other copies of this Iraqi newspaper exist. This newspaper was obviously produced for the large number of British expatriates and military personnel serving in Iraq during the First World War. It is an interesting reflection that although the British had only been in Iraq for three years (on the pretext of protecting the oil fields) within that short period of time, Basra, Iraq’s second city, had gained a special position among the British, on the evidence of the advertisements of British banks, commercial enterprises, photographers, even agents for Scotch whisky…
The issues cover also the news from the war fronts, reports about Turkish tyranny, reports from Iraq, Persia, the political and military situation in Europe especially from Germany and British trade after the war.
