Synopsis

RARE illustrated account of a travel from Cairo to Damascus with chapters by a Victorian cleric on Suez, Feiran, Ghebel Mousa, Nukhi, Beersheba, Jerusalem, Jordan and the Dead Sea, Tiberias, Beirut and Lebanon. Robert Walter Stewart (also called Roberto Gualtiero, 1812-1887) was a Scottish traveller and pastor, who was an important figure in Italian Protestantism and author of several books. He undertook this pilgrimage between 1854-1856
Stewart’s work is usually encountered in various colours of blind-stamped binding without the gilt illustration to the spine seen here.
