Synopsis

The author gives an account of his two visits to Mesopotamia – the first in connection with the Turco-Persian Frontier Commission in 1849-52 and the second in the company of an expedition sent out by the Assyrian Excavation Fund at the end of 1853. On his journeys he describes the ruins of Warka, later identified by archaeologists as the city of Ur.
