Synopsis

First edition, the issue with the dated title. Cordier cites a later edition, 1853. This work was published for the Univers series. Jouannin was first interpreter to the King and director of the college Louis-Le-Grand. He had studied at the Ecole des Jeunes de Langues in Constantinople, and he spent the years 1803-10 studying and travelling in the Levant. He visited the East again from 1817-26. Jouannin furnished notes and material for many authors who wrote on the Levant e.g. Dupre, Tancoigne, Andreossy. He also produced Statuquo d’Orient, 1839 and translations from the Persian. The plates from this work are taken from well-known sources such as d’Ohsson, etc.
